Naive Watercolor Painting by John Stocking, England, c. 1843
This is a small naive English watercolor painting by John Stocking. The watercolor is 5 5/8 inches by 2 1/2 inches in a wood frame that measures 7 1/2 inches by 4 3/8 inches that has added colors of brown and gold. This style of art from the 1840's England would have been placed in a category of 'naive or primitive'. The painting is of a tiger in a surround of green jungle like foliage.
On the back of the painting is the following text:
"John Stocking Water color pictures 1843: Watercolor picture by John Stocking, taken from a scrap book dated 1843. It would appear that John was born in about 1836 in Walsoken, Wisbeach the son of a police officer. In the 1881 census he is working as a carpenter in Delph, Cambridge with his wife Ann and their 13 year old son Frederick."
