English Mahogany Shop Keepers Accountant and Storage Box
This is wonderful antique wooden box that might have been used by shopkeepers or perhaps an accountant to store a variety of items including paper, money, writing tools and so forth. I think the box would also be used as a writing desk as it is sloped, and the flat lid at the back of the top lifts revealing three smaller storage compartments (see the photos). There is one larger compartment in the center, and two smaller on either side. These could have been used to store writing tools, or money, as there is a working lock at the lid, although we don't have the key. The main box also has a working lock without the key.
The mahogany is in good condition. There are a few user user marks on the lip of the front of the box when you lift the lid. The box itself sits on a flared platform giving as very nice look. This is a free standing box. The bottom is fully fitted with mahogany.
In the center of the front of the box is a reverse architectural painting on glass set in an oval shape with a very nice mahogany oval border. The painting and glass are in good order. The oval shaped border measures 14 1/2 inches wide and is 4 1/4 inches high.
The storage box measures 20 inches wide at the base, 9 inches high at the front, 12 1/4 inches high at the back, and 14 1/4 inches deep.
The shop keepers box is in good condition and its origin is the U.K.
