Athletic Painted Wood Linen Towels, 19th Century England
This is a wonderfully constructed and framed wood trunk from England, c. 1880 - 1900. The wood trunk has been hand painted to make it look like a more expensive piece. The lid is framed with 1 inch stripping around 3 lengths. The trunk is reinforced with metal supports at the four corners furthering the rustic look of the trunk. Each side of the trunk has rustic metallic handles.
The word TOWELS is stenciled in red on the lid of this trunk.
The bottom of the trunk sits on a frame-like structure, 2 inch boards around the bottom supported with metal clasps, and beneath the trunk are two boards used as supports struts that the trunk sits on.
Lifting the lid of the box reveals a very large open space that has been covered with a green stars pattern paper. There are tears in the paper, but it is suitable for use.
We have two of these boxes in the shop at this time, numbered "2" and "3". You can see them sitting on top of each other in the last photo. This trunks may have been used to carry linens in a sports complex.
This trunk is painted number "3" in black paint within a white wash circle. The trunk measures 26 inches wide x 15 3/4 inches deep x 15 inches high.
This is a great usable trunk that would make a wonderful addition to a home, or shop.
