English Shopkeepers Box or Desk, Mahogany Slanted Writing Desk
This is a very nice English shop-keepers mahogany slanted desk, c. 1900. The mahogany slopping front has a leather inlay, and the surrounding mahogany sets the slope of very well. At the top of the slopping lid, there is length-wise board that lifts up, revealing a storage compartment.
Opening the slope, reveals a large compartment. The two knobs that you see at the far end of the compartment are for design only.
The desk measures 21 1/4 inches wide, 17 1/2 inches deep, and 5 1/4 inches high at the back of the desk. There is a repair on the top left side side of a thin board that runs the width of the box. At one time, the desk might have been fitted on top of another piece of furniture. One of the boards that would have been used to fasten it, is missing.
This is a very charming desk, and would function very nicely on a desk, or work place. 'Teachers Desk'?
