Walnut Sewing Box, English Victorian Tunbridgeware
This is an English Victorian walnut sewing box with tunbridge-ware decorative inlay in the form of geometric stringing around the front and top edges of the sewing box. The sewing box has a brass escutcheon with a working lock and key, and a brass cartouche with engraved letters A.L 1884. The brass is edged with geometric inlay and stringing.
The box is fully fitted with a lift out tray with compartments for spools, needles, and other sewing tools. The blue lining is stunning, although the lining on the tray may have been replaced at some time.
The condition of the walnut and the blue silk is very good. The left lower side of the walnut shows some wear, and perhaps a very small repair. The box measures 12 inches wide, 9 inches deep, and 6 inches high.
The box is beautiful, and would be a wonderful addition to a collection, and would also be a nice gift. C. 1870
