Apothecary Jar, "Cerussa" or Sugar of Lead, 9 1/2 Inch
This a large 9 1/2 inch tall apothecary jar labeled Cerussa. Cerussa was a mixture of vinegar and white lead which was used to whiten the skin. The vinegar would dissolve the white lead, and even though lead was known to be poisonous, wealthy Roman women used the dried cerussa (La Bella Donna website) as did the French and English women of Privilege.
The ponti is clearly visible on the bottom of the jar. Slight imperfections in the glass near the ponti. C.,1880 or earlier
