Leather Books The Rise of the Dutch Republic: A History in 3 Volumes by Lothrop Motley, 1906
Lothrop Motley, an American historian (1814 - 1977), ambassador to the Austrian Empire, and Great Britain, lived in Europe and England after 1851. He spent five years in Europe investigating the archives, which resulted in 1856 in the publication of The Rise of Dutch Republic. It was the first publication of Dutch history that was published in English, French, German and Russian. Motley published other books including The United Netherlands, The Causes of the Civil War in America, and Historic Progress and American Democracy.
The three-volume history of the Dutch Republic is bound in red leather with gold tooling on the covers and the spines. The leather and the gold tooling are in very good condition. The 1500 pages of text are free of rips or tears and are very clean. There is slight bit of foxing on a few of the end pages.
The books measure 7 inches by 4.5 inches. A wonderful collection of a very popular historical set of books.
