18c English Bible Box with Brass Handles
This is a beautiful bible box that was purchased in England. It is a bible box which probably dates to the late 1700's or early 1800's. There is a wonderful hand-carved design of five pedestal style figures on the face of the box. Carved into the lid of the box are large letters: A & JMS.
The brass hinges on the lid are old replacements. If you look down on the lid, you can see where the original, probably Iron hinges, were located. The lock mechanism appears to be original. The locking clasp is original, but it was removed at one time and then put back on.
The box has a set of brass handles on the sides and would have been added at a later date. This box is heavy without anything inside so the handles were necessary. The patina on all sides is very good. The lid was made of two boards, one of which is a 4" board, and the other an 8" board. There is an age crack in the 8" board, as you can see in the photos.
The box lid is 25 7/16" wide, and 15 1/2" deep. The box is 9 1/2" high. The interior of the box is lined with a green paper that is quite old, and has wear marks.
This is a wonderful antique English Bible box. The box was all hand carved and would have held the families most valued possession. This box is beautiful to display by itself of with a grouping of other antique boxes.
