Circa 1830. Italian, Lacquered and Gilded Tilt-Top Games Table. Probably Venetian, drop dead gorgeous and in extremely fine original condition, I believe this is my most unusual find this year. This superb Italian chess table features a chess board of inlaid abalone shell on a black lacquered wood surface. It is highly decorated all over in a rich gold gilding of leaves, lines and other designs which I believe were stenciled. The graceful turned pedestal and legs are also lacquered and highly decorated with gold. There is a remnant of soft green paint among the gilded designs. The table top has a fancy apron which is also decorated in an intricate gold design. Everything about this piece appears original down to well worn white porcelain casters. The chess table has wear to the gilding and some roughness to the outside edges that is more noticeably felt than seen. Nothing missing, nothing broken and no restorations. Fresh from a Rye New York estate. 45" tall x 25 1/2" diameter in the upright position, 29 3/4" to the table top with the top down. Price $2,300.
