Nowadays collecting mudmen has become increasingly popular. While most collectors are starting their collections with more common figures, some have progressed to a more serious level. Whatever your collecting preferences, learning about the meanings and desirable features.
This particular figurine is Kuo Chiu, the Royal Immortal. He holds castanets (not to be confused with the musical castanets in the West). By his hat he is also a scholar. He is glazed in blue and black. He sits on an unglazed brown rock, which gives it a realistic"feel." He is accented with black. His castanets are in aqua.
The next thing to value is the condition of the figure. Are the colors still vibrant? Is there damage? Almost all mudmen will have some roughness around the base which is acceptable. However try to avoid broken or restored pieces, unless it is a truly rare piece.
Size: 4 inches tall
Marks: Incised "China." Much has rubbed away, but is still able to be identified.
Condition: Very Good. Much less than expected roughness around the base.
Circa: 1890 - 1919
This is from my most recent purchase of a mudman collection. This collection has many rare and extremely rare pieces in exceptional condition.
