The art world is still grieving the loss of Willie Daniels last year. Very recently, Johnny Daniels passed away earlier this year. There are very few of the original twenty-six Florida Highwaymen left, and few of them are still painting.

Hall of Fame artist Willie Daniels, one of the original Florida Highwaymen, created paintings that are technically skilled and emotionally strong. He grew up learning from his neighbors Harold Newton and Roy McLendon. Willie Daniels paintings, with their classic nail-etched "W. Daniels" signature, are from the soul of a man who appreciated the beauty around him, in spite of the hardships

"Florida Highwaymen" is the collective name given to a small group of African American painters from Ft. Pierce, Florida, who began painting Florida scenes in the late 1950s. They painted with their natural talents and with their hearts, finding comfort and solace in their art after picking oranges during the day in the grueling Florida sun. Their work was finally recognized in the 1980s and has skyrocketed in popularity and price. Their work is now in the Smithsonian, as well as in major collections and many significant galleries and museums.

Much more information can be found on "Highwaymans Trail" as well as the Florida Department of State Dept of Cultural Affairs..
