One rarely sees original Theo Tobiasse works on the market. There is a parallel, in my mind, to Marc Chagall. His work progressed from originals to high priced lithographs as well. I purchased several original Tobiasse works from Nahan Gallery in the 1970s.; a painting and this drawing. I sold the painting (now I regret it!) but have kept this treasure through the years.

Theo Tobiasse and his family were in hiding in a tiny Paris apartment fearing for their lives from 1942 to 1944 during the Nazi occupation of France. He often said later that his life experiences shaped his work. The works of Théo Tobiasse are comparable to those by Marc Chagall. Like Chagall, Tobiasse would create paintings and drawings from Jewish culture. They alluded to biblical content, and often dealt with erotic fantasies as well as themes of loneliness and isolation. Tobiasse contrasted the often difficult themes of his works with a flowing language of forms and bright colors.
