Nowadays collecting mudmen has become increasingly popular. While most collectors are starting their collections with more common figures, some have progressed to a more serious level. Whatever your collecting preferences, learning about the meanings and desirable features is fascinating and fun.
This particular fellow is glazed in the Sancai tradition of Jade Green, Mustard Yellow and Cerulean Blue. (The blue is somewhat lighter than one usually sees. He is a more common figure, but well-worth collecting because of his condition and of course is priced less than more uncommon figures. He holds a dual scroll signifying wisdom, and a palm fan signifying integrity.
Country of Origin: China.
Size: 4 1/2 inches tall.
Marks: Incised mark on base "China"
Circa: 1890 - 1919.
Condition: Colors are vivid. No cracks, chips or other losses. The usual rubs and roughness around the very bottom of the base. The overall condition is much better than you would expect from an object of substantial age that has been displayed/handled/used, usually over the lifetimes of several owners.
This is from my most recent purchase of the renowned Patricia Hardin collection of mudmen, This collection has many rare and extremely rare pieces in exceptional condition.
