This is one of two outstanding paintings by James Hutchinson that I am so proud to offer. James Hutchinson (b.1932- present) was inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2011. Hutchinson was never part of the Indian River School of Art nor The Highwaymen rather he predates both; he was A.E. Backus' brother-in-law. Backus was married to Patricia (Patsy) Hutchinson in the 1940's. Hutchinson informally learned at the early age of 17 about Backus' style of painting and often visited his studio residence.

As Hutchinson independently developed as an artist, he lived with the Seminole Indians in Brighton and Big Cypress reservations from 1959-1964 and received an Arthur Vining Davis Foundations grant for 50 paintings of the Seminole tribe that the State of Florida now owns and circulates from the capitol to various state venues and museums.
Permanent collections include:
The Society of the Four Arts - Palm Beach, FL
Miami's Historical Museum of Southern Florida - Miami, FL
The Cici and Hyatt Brown Museum of Art - Daytona, FL
The Elliott Museum - Stuart, FL
The A.E. Backus Museum - Fort Pierce, FL
State of Florida's Capitol building - Tallahassee, FL
Museum of Florida's History - Tallahassee, FL

James Hutchinson’s Florida art was inspired from his time living with the Seminole Indian tribes on the Brighton reservation in Florida where James and his wife, Joanie, lived with the Seminole people for six years.
