Rodney Demps was known as the “Surrealist Highwayman”, his imaginatively beautiful landscape paintings give glimpses into his abundantly creative world. Rodney Demps was In 2004, Rodney was named one of twenty-six “Original” Florida Highwaymen artists with the induction into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame.
Growing up in Fort Pierce, he was an art mentee under the guidance of A.E. “Bean” Backus, known as the “Dean of Florida Landscape Painting”. This connection allowed Rodney to become a protege of the late Alfred Hair, co-founder of the Florida Highwaymen artist movement.
This painting is wonderful. It has a yellow poinciana done boldly with heavy palette knife application of the yellow, having it stand out and attract attention. Then you realize that there is a lady doing laundry, and hanging it on a line. What an unusual small scene included.
Who were the Highwaymen? A group of young African-American landscape and skyscape painters, these artists painted their way out of the despair awaiting them as workers in Florida citrus groves and packing houses of the 1950s. These self-taught artists are now
at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Florida vernacular art at the Gadsden Arts Center, and many other museums.

"Perhaps the art of the Highwaymen can best be described as a marriage of rich arresting color and stark simplicity of form. If the viewer lets his or her imagination soar, the effect is almost hypnotic—these scenes appear to be embedded in time."
