In the early 1950s through the 1980s a group of twenty-six African-American artists painted beautiful landscapes that displayed the serene, undeveloped Florida landscape of their time. Today these artists are known as the "Florida Highwaymen". Their original paintings are highly demanded by collectors and enthusiasts. (Thanks to Florida Highwaymen Paintings).
John Maynor must be considered one of the giants of the Highwaymen. This painting exhibits his signature reflection of trees, birds, and dramatic sky setting over the marsh. Mr. Maynor adopted much of A. E. Backus' style, which took more time but lent a sophistication and unique appeal. He used particularly heavy palette knife strokes to lend depth to oils in his own distinctive style.
His work is quite rare on the secondary market, and more costly than many of the other Highwaymen who were more prolific and somewhat less attentive to detail. This particular work is outstanding, in my opinion. We have priced it with consideration of the
outstanding quality of the work, as well as a market of rapidly increasing prices for his artwork.
John Maynor passed away in 2016. He is sorely missed.
