The Highwaymen, a group of 26, all men and one woman has come a long way, but only because they are now aged and gray. In their journey, they have accomplished a list of accolades, but only over years and decades. From the 1950s, times of turmoil, until 2004, that's the time it has taken twenty-six African Americans to receive recognition, an induction into the Museum of Florida History, Artists Hall of Fame, in Tallahassee Florida. The Highwaymen most recent accolade is "the Smithsonian!" In November 2017, the group was reaffirmed by the "National Museum of African American History & Culture (NMAAHC) in Washington D. C." From the side of the road to legends of the road, the history makers have earned state, national and international achievements. "But it hasn't always been that way," in reality, it has been a "struggle" that has taken decades, over a lifetime, for the group who became known as the Florida Highwaymen Original Artists.
Al Black is one of the most interesting and truly intriguing Highwayman Artist. He is one of the original Highwaymen. A very private person in some ways, with no biographical data known, including his place and date of birth. He was a loquacious seller, speaking a great deal to prospective buyers, but otherwise gave very few interviews.
Black, known as "Blood", had a colorful but checkered life. He fought a cocaine addiction, and was in and out of jail for drug and fraud charges. As far as we know, he has been released from prison.
His paintings characteristically include sea birds in his coastal works; usually three white birds flying in the sky. He says the birds are representative of the Holy Trinity. Black sometimes adds a fourth bird that lags behind the others to his paintings, which he claims signifies himself.
His work is almost always irenic and serene, perhaps representing his heart's wish so different than his life. He certainly is (or was?) a complicated man, whose art is, in my opinion, wonderful. An excellent example of one of the best of the original Highwaymen. Sam Newton, A. E. Backus, R. A. McLendon, Chico Wheeler and Al Black are some of my all-time Highwaymen favorites; although so many of the others are also outstanding, such as Johnny Daniels and others. There are some "almost" Highwaymen such as Ahmed Eltemtany that I expect will be inducted into the Highwaymen. Some of the second generation are also worth collecting before their prices rise as has their fathers. A good example is Tracy Newton. He is quite an exceptional artist.
This particular offering is a loving depiction of the purple jacaranda tree next to a dirt road along the Indian River. Jacaranda trees are occasionally seen in most of the Highwaymen's art, although each one has his (or her) own style.
Please remember that the original paintings that I offer are one of a kind. If you love a particular one of a kind offering, the fact that there may be different or lesser works available by the same artist at a lower price will not be the same to you.
.Recently the prices of Mr. Black's works have steadily gone up. I would expect prices to continue to rise, especially after the movie about the Highwaymen is released.
