Frank Meisler (Polish 1925 - 2018) - "Fiddler On The Roof" - Wonderful Sculpture By Internationally Acclaimed Sculptor - Partially Jointed - Silver and Gold-Plated On A Revolving Base.
Frank Meisler was born into a Jewish family in Danzig (now Gdańsk, Poland). In August, 1939, Danzig and the surroundings embraced Nazism. Meisler was no longer safe in his home. There were anti-Jewish riots and the Great Synagogue of Danzig was taken over and demolished. His desperate parents requested his being taken by the Kindertrasport (German, Children’s Transport), an organised rescue that took place just before the outbreak of the Second World War. He escaped to the U. K. at age 13. He travelled with other Jewish children via Berlin to the Netherlands and then to Liverpool Street station in London. His parents were later murdered at Auschwitz concentration camp. Frank was raised by an aunt, who lived in London. He attended school in Harrow, and then did national service in the Royal Air Force. He studied architecture at the University of Manchester, and was involved in the construction of the Heathrow Airport. In the late 1950's he moved to Israel. There he created public sculptures including a memorial to Ben Gurion in Israel, Eternal Kiev in Kiev, and a series of Kindertransport memorials: Kindertransport – The Arrival erected at Liverpool Street station in London in 2006, Trains to Life – Trains to Death erected at Friedrichstraße station in Berlin in 2008, The Departure erected at Gdańsk Główny station in 2009, Crossing to Life erected at the Hook of Holland in 2011 and The final parting erected at Hamburg Dammtor station. He also designed the interior of the Holocaust Memorial Synagogue in Moscow, and sculptures for Russia's National War Memorial. A memorial of the death march of Jewish prisoners (and subsequent murders at Palmnicken) was erected in Kaliningrad (formerly Königsberg) in 2011.
Seventy years after he was saved, in 2009, he returned to his birthplace with his memorial sculpture dedicated to the children of the Kindertransport and those who had saved their lives. This wonderful organization saved 10,000 children between 1938 and 1940. In Britain, Frank Meisler is best known for his “Children of the Kindertransport” monument on Hope Square, Liverpool Street Station.
