Don D. Brown (American, b. 1947) has the distinction of having worked with and been taught by Albert Ernest (Beanie) Backus (American, 1906-1990), regarded as the Dean of Florida Painters and mentor of The Florida Highwaymen, as well as being a member of the quite prestigious "Indian River School" of artists. and was taught by A.E. Backus there as well.. The Indian River School of Painting, which was not a formal school but was a group which began with mostly African-American Florida working class people who wanted to paint, became well-known and well-loved along with the Highwaymen. A.E. Backus left his mark on both the Highwaymen and the Indian River School.
