This is a great example of artwork's ability to provoke strong opinions; or, as many say "You love it or you hate it!" At least it is not possible to see this on the wall and not have a response. I happen to really like it, and obviously Ms. Charisse certainly liked it, since it hung in her home until her death. I purchased it from her estate. I love the deliberate exaggerations that the artist used to convey Ms. Charisse's intensity and athletic flexibility. Having read a bit about Ms. Charisse, I feel she is a role model for almost anyone. She became one of the most famous and talented dancers of the 20th Century, having overcome polio as a child!

Medium: Oil on canvas.

Size: 49 by 38 inches, overall.

Signed: Lower right "M. Herrera." I am not sure which Herrera painted this. There are several, one of which has had the painting "Reclining Woman" sold at Sothebys in 1981 for $3100. There is also another talented artist, female, named M. Herrera. I will continue to search, but in the meantime I will enjoy this inspirational painting.

Condition: Very Good.

PROVENANCE From the Estate of Cyd Charisse through Juliens of Beverly Hills, California.
