This is a rare and beautiful art glass sculpture by Steuben, one of the world's most renowned crystallieres. When this was issued, and in the rare occasions that a mint piece is offered, the price is over $1,200.00. When one is offered in good vintage condition, such as this one, one rarely sees it offered for under $450.00, so we have reduced the price substantially. (More about Steuben at the end of the listing).
Country of Origin: United States of America.
Medium: Fine Crystal.
Size: 4 3/4" tall.
Signed: "Steuben" on bottom.
Condition: There are scratches on bottom. A few small scratches on the bottom edges. We have accentuated them considerably in the photos. In person I didn't see the ones near the bottom until I did a close inspection.
Steuben Glass was founded by Frederick Carder in 1903. It ranked as the world's foremost artisan glass house. Handmade by American craftsmen at the works in Corning NY, it was frequently the United States' gift of State to foreign dignitaries. Steuben marketed no "seconds," items that did not meet their exacting standards were destroyed by being smashed in a bin. Steuben, a recognized luxury brand and the ultimate in art glass.
In 1933, Steuben created a prismatic crystal formula that could capture, reflect and refract light unlike anything else in the world. Since that moment, Steuben crystal has illuminated everything it touches, casting light on the joys of everyday life. Based in New York for over a century, Steuben believes (as I do!) that no matter how forward our technology, the things we cherish most are those made by hand. In 1940 Steuben commissioned the landmark exhibition 27 Artists in Crystal, featuring designs by legendary artists such as Georgia O’Keefe, Henri Matisse and Salvador Dalí. A tradition began. Today, Steuben collaborates with contemporary artists to create objects that bring pleasure to living and mark the passage of time.
