This wonderful miniature painting is one of quite a few items I purchased years ago from another Ruby Lane shop, one who remains in good standing, both in Ruby Lane and in my estimation. I will let her description tell the story (I got her permission to copy her descriptions of items I purchased from her).
"A superb Russian painting and on the back is written 1820. On paper and attached to old card stock, looks to be a father and son. Their faces are masterpieces, the intricate wrinkles and life lines on the man's face and the wide eyed wonder of the boys. The clothing is quite wonderful with his suit coat quite wrinkled and wearing a black arm band. Still life on the table of a book with glasses, a pipe and glass or tobacco case. There is a signature in the foreground on the bowl of the pipe. Difficult to make out and it appears to be in Cyrillic. Frame looks to be original and is beautifully carved and gold gilt. Overall in good condition with a bit of paint wear to the edges."
I will inject my interpretation of the painting, since the black arm band on the gentleman has puzzled me. Perhaps this is a father and son who have just suffered the loss of the wife/mother. The expression on the father's face, to me, is one of resolve and determination and love for the boy. The boy looks to still be not totally comprehending life at that point. Yet the man's strength combined with a glimmer of a strong yet gentle love gives one belief in the future for both of them. Isn't it wonderful how art can make us feel so much?
