This very heavy plaque commemorates George Washington's inauguration, April 30, 1789. It is shaped like a hammer. It has a profile of George Washington, and raised letters on the handle. It has a maker's mark on back which I can not read. There is a circle with a mark inside, and what appears to be a "frame" that has been worn down with time. There is a scroll or branch design on the front of the handle separating the words on the left from those on the right.
Size: 11 1/2" long.
Marks: Front of Handle: "Washington" "Inaugurated" "President of the U S" "Apr 30, 1789." The "U S" is stylized, as is the "P" and the "I". Back of Handle: "A circle with a mark inside, and what appears to be a "frame" that has been worn down with time."
Condition: Fair. No losses, but a good deal of rust.
