This is one of two original paintings I am listing by Sandu Liberman. It is difficult to find comparables for his ORIGINAL works, since there is little on the market. What is present is quite expensive. Sandu Liberman is a well-recognized artist, whose lithographs have risen in price to hundreds of dollars. As so many of you have realized, I always prefer original art to any type of limited edition. I expect his prices to continue to rise.
While he was still in his native Romania, Liberman exhibited in a number of state shows in Bucharest. In 1952 he was awarded the gold medal at the International Art Festival in Romania. That same year he was commissioned to illustrate the large encyclopedia "Romania", and was appointed Official Portrait Artist of Romania.
He went to Israel in 1962 and settled there. Liberman was commissioned by the Government of Israel to make portraits on many occasions. in 1965 he was commissioned by the Government of Israel to make a portrait of the President of Guinea. It hangs in the Royal Palace.
This is a very sweet painting. So much to think about. His clothing could be a uniform, so it could be a soldier with his girlfriend; perhaps before deployment. There is a figure in the background. Does he (or she) have any significance? I love art that gives me enjoyment, whether by being thought-provoking or by creating a mood.
