Two of these beautiful antique match safes (vestas) were available at an auction, as well as two matching letter openers which have been listed separately. It would appear that there was some type of celebratory event occurred, and these were made for that event. Each one is dated "1756 - 1898" and engraved on the reverse "St. Andrew Lodge." The silver surrounding the engravings is in high relief and very lovely. The shaped match safe has repousse borders centering shaped reserve with the dates on one side and the lodge name on the other. This listing is for ONE of them.
From what I can gather, the St. Andrew Lodge is a Masonic Lodge. Can't say much about Freemasonry, except that it is my understanding that the lodges do a great deal of public service. I am hoping that these beautiful silver articles will find a home that appreciates them. Perhaps a browser can give me more information on them.
