This well-carved wood netsuke depicts Daruma who was credited in ancient China and Japan as the founder of Zen Buddhism. Here he is seated and holding a whisk above his head. I am not sure of the significance of the whisk, but would guess he is trying to cleanse the earth of evil or wrongdoing.
Size: 2" tall.
Marked: Bottom (on box next to Daruma).
Condition: Very Good. No losses. Some expected wear.
Circa: Early 20th Century.
