Carlton did not create many portraits, but when he did he obviously was moved by the person he depicted. This young girl is an example of conveying beauty without embellishment. The natural fall of her hair, her apparently spontaneous smile, the charming young girl's frock with the high neck and tiny flowers, and the light in her eyes all combine for a very touching portrait.
