Photos do not do justice to this incredibly beautiful weight by the well-known and always in demand Paul Stankard. Some say he is the greatest living paperweight artist. He certainly ranks among the very top contemporary artists. There are a number of books and publications, articles, etc about him here and in Europe. I have a personally signed copy of "A Floating World" about Paul Stankard, put out by the Museum Of Arts And Design. It is one of my "treasures."
I have particularly enjoyed this weight with the profusion of orchids among the green leaves. This exquisite 1979 compound paperweight is titled "Showy Lady's Slipper's " The term compound paperweight refers to multiple layers of the colored glass designs encased in clear crystal. It features a cluster of white and dark pink Showy Lady's Slipper Orchids with green veined leaves. (The term compound paperweight refers to multiple layers of the colored glass designs encased in clear crystal.) This paperweight is documented in the book on page 69 of the book Paul J. Stankard Homage to Nature by Ulysses Grant Dietz.
It is also shown on page 34 of the Museum of Arts & Design catalog entitled Paul J. Stankard A Floating World: Forty Years of an American Master in Glass.
