' Paul and Virginie ' is a novel by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre (1737-1814), written in 1787. It was a huge success beyond the borders.
Paul and Virginie describes the story of two children living on the Isle of France (later Mauritius). From two different families, Paul and Virginie are brought up together as brother and sister, but in adolescence, romantic feelings arise between the two characters.
Virginie's mother, Madame de la Tour decided to remove her from Paul, sending his daughter to study in France, leaving Paul to his grief.
Several years later, Virginie announced her return to the island, but the ship that brought her to France is caught in a storm and stranded on the rocks in front of Paul. It was not long before he succumbed to the pain of his loss.
