Sulfide paperweights are a low cost way of starting a paperweight collection. Since they almost always picture a historical figure, it is a great way to teach a child history and start them on their own paperweight collection. Some will stay with sulfides; others will branch out into either lampwork or millefiori weights. There is a plethora of possibilities! Contemporary weights from the fanciful to the precisely accurate; antique weights from the Classic period that open a whole new category for the collector. As you may notice from the weights I have listed from my personal collection, it can definitely be habit-forming. I have many more of almost all types to list, with the exception of sulfides. I have given almost all of my sulfides away as gifts for various holidays.
This sulfide crystal paperweight features Lafayette. He was a French aristocrat and military officer. Lafayette was a general in the American Revolutionary War and a leader of the Garde nationale during the French Revolution.
In the American Revolution, Lafayette served as a major-general in the Continental Army under George Washington. Wounded during the Battle of Brandywine, he still managed to organize a successful retreat. He served with distinction in the Battle of Rhode Island. In the middle of the war, he returned to France to negotiate an increase in French support. On his return, he blocked troops led by Cornwallis at Yorktown while the armies of Washington and those sent by King Louis XVI under the command of General de Rochambeau, Admiral de Grasse, and Admiral de Latouche Tréville prepared for battle against the British. There is much more to learn about this important figure in our history as well as that of France.
