Although we no longer list ivory objects for the sake of endangered and nearly endangered species, I still love netsukes from times gone by. There are so many beautiful carved wood pieces that I have also collected through the years. This one is especially interesting, with a bearded sage holding a staff with double gourd and riding a large fish. He has inlaid eyes. The gourd is a symbol of healing and medicine, although a double gourd could also represent prosperity. Wouldn't this be a unique and appropriate gift for a physician or someone in the health sciences?

Size: 3 1/2" long.

Circa: Vintage or Antique. No later than mid 1900s; possibly as early as 1900.

Condition: Very Good to Excellent. Some wear.

THIS IS MADE OF WOOD. NO IVORY IS EVER OFFERED IN MY SHOP.
