This fascinating and rare teapot, Royle's Patent Self Pouring, is beautiful and utilitarian and relatively unknown.

The teapot works by a pumping mechanism. The lid is raised then depressed with the finger covering the small hole in the top generating pressure within the teapot to expel tea out of the spout. The curved spout meant the teapot did not have to be lifted. The water was forced through the tea leaves in the bottom of the pot which was thought to enhance the flavour

This ivory colored earthenware teapot has a tall cylindrical base supporting a globular body with a tall cylindrical neck. Base and neck are fluted. Handle and spout moulded and edged with gold to resemble bamboo stalks. Neck, body and base are decorated with hand coloured transfer printed design of Australian wildflowers in green, pink and mauve with a gold outline. Silver plated lid has a domed gadrooned top surmounted by a black ceramic knob.

It was decorated by J Walklate after design by Louis Bilton. Made by Doulton & Co, Burslem, England.

Circa 1892. (It was made 1887 - 1897.)

Condition: Teapot itself is in Very Good Condition with no losses. There is some color change of the silver plated top's exterior portion.

Marks: marked in black on base 'ROYLES PATENT SELF POURING/No6327/1886/MANUFACTURED BY/ DOULTON'S/BURSLEM/FOR/J J ROYLE/MANCHESTER' and beneath it '307.13th.25'.
