This is such a fascinating piece. The immortal is seated holding a fan in one hand, and an insect in the other. The fan is a symbol of authority in Chinese legend. The cicada was regarded as a symbol of rebirth or immortality.
I like everything about this bronze. The expression on his face is such delight in the cicada. A most interesting subject matter.
Size: Nearly 9 inches tall, and 6 inches wide.
Circa early 1900s.
Provenance: Chait Gallery.
Condition: No damage. Some minor wear of the silvering.
The overall condition is somewhat better than you would expect from an object of substantial age that has been displayed/handled/used, usually over the lifetimes of several owners. Unsigned.
