This is the type of piece that one either loves or hates..... nothing in-between. I happen to be in the first category. Loved it immediately when I saw it at auction many many years ago. It is in Very Good Condition with no cracks or breaks. A bit dirty that I have not cleaned. It was made to hang on the wall. It has the artist's signature circle - RB - on the back. This is 9 1/2" by 8" by 3".

The ceramic is semi-refractory, and hand-painted with glazes. What I found wonderful is that Biavati's works are "animated" by fantastic figures, curious inhabitants of a universe whimsical and magical at the same time so familiar that seems to resurface the mind from our childhood memories. (As many of my clients have realized, I have extremely eclectic taste, as well as being someone who has gotten older, but who has never grown up!)

Riccardo Biavati was born in 1950 in Ferrara. As a child, he loved to listen to the tales his grandfather invented for him. In an interview to Marialivia Brunelli he admitted that he never left the fairy world that he inhabited during his childhood. It's a parallel world, where dreams come true and frogs, owls and blackbirds are familiar figures in the landscape. He calls them "his personal archaeology", that he playfully combines with ancestral elements: the sun, the moon, the sea, wind, fire and, most importantly, mother earth. Is he my alter ego or what??? Laughing.

Biavati's works positively exude emotions and dreams. It's part of their charm and you can't help to feel light hearted and ... smile. All of his pieces are "unique pieces." His work has gone up as it has been exhibited in so many solo and group exhibitions. He is most popular in Italy and the Continent, but has achieved acclaim here in the U. S. A. as well.
