The sculptor of this very unusual carving portrays two animals, possibly mother and offspring, somewhat dog-like in appearance. There is a water jug behind them, and a bird at the right side, near the larger figure's tail. The coloring of the stone, progresses from green to shades of reddish brown for the jug, the bird, and part of the ground cover.
There are very interesting carved markings on the animals, as well as markings for eyebrows. If you zoom in, you should be able to see them in the photographs.
This measures 8 and 1/4 inches long, and 6 and 1/4 inches tall.
Condition: This is in Very Good to Excellent Condition with no losses, but some minor expected scratches on the underside primarily. The overall condition is a bit better than you would expect from an object of substantial age that has been displayed/handled/used, usually over the lifetimes of several owners.
We purchased this from Chait Galleries who felt it was made at the turn of the Century, about 1900 or earlier.
