This well detailed ink on paper drawing is by John Sturgess, a well-listed sporting and animal painter who exhibited widely in the London galleries. He spent many years studying the action and behavior of horses and their anatomy and was consequently able to capture the reality, dangers and excitement of the hunting and steeplechase field. Known also as an accomplished illustrator of books and magazines.
The picture without the frame is 23 cm / 9 inches high and 38 cm / 15 inches wide. The frame itself is 2 cm /inches wide. The passepartout is 4 cm / 1.5 inch wide.

The drawing is in a fairly good condition with some yellowing of the paper, stains and there is a cut in the paper right of the centre at the lower edge. The beautiful wooden frame is in good condition with minor scratches and signs of wear. It is mounted with plexi glass. There is an article on horse painting taped on the back.
