"Paul Stankard has established the standard by which we judge contemporary paperweight art. His creativity in producing the lampworked elements goes far beyond simply evoking nature realistically; his work evidences originality, whimsy and poetic vision—in addition to technical mastery—which places him in a class by himself."
—Dwight P. Lanmon, director, Winterthur Museum Garden and Library, and former director of The Corning Museum of Glass. How much can I add to that quote? Paul J. Stankard, American (b. 1943) Tall lampworked glass Botanical paperweight with flowers, dragonfly, root people, blueberries, moss. Signed Paul J. Stankard MI 2005. Very good condition. Measures 5-1/2" H.
"Leafy Roots over Cinnamon Men Botanical", is 5 1/2" tall (!) and 3" wide at the base, and is a huge (and, of course, unique) piece of glass. Here the two sides are left in "cold" condition; that is, the two sides are not ground and polished as the front and back are, so that the side view is less distinct than the front and back views but still there. The amazing realism of the flower and leaves are subtly contrasted with the cinnamon "men" on bottom.
Please note that one of the photos picked up the green color from the background. It is actually clear.
This is in Very Good to Excellent Condition.
A beautiful work of art such as this by today's premier glass sculptor should be treasured, and handed down to future generations. I believe this will continue to appreciate, as Stankard works have done through the last many years.
We have substantially reduced the price in order to reduce inventory. Since we would normally send this to auction, we'd rather pass the savings on to customers, (the auction's commission). .
