As my serious paperweight collectors have probably noticed, my collection has been primarily Classic Period Antique weights from the "Big Three" French factories of Clichy, Baccarat, and St. Louis, with occasional Bacchus. They have also noticed that I do love several contemporary artists, who I consider to be the best - Paul Stankard. Stevel Lundberg, and Chris Buzzini. And, as serious collectors know (sometimes from expensive mistakes) that not every weight from a particular artist is the same quality or price. I've always wanted the exceptional; the top of an artist's work. While the work that comes from "Stankard Studios" or any of the gifted artists that have learned from Mr. Stankard (but are not the Master himself) is quite good, but the Stankard weights that I am listing are definitely among the best he PERSONALLY produced. Those of us who followed Stankard's artistic progress can appreciate the differences from the first sweet but tentative weights, and the change, the marked improvements, that he reached a bit later on. Most serious collectors were astonished and very enamored with his"root people." To this day, those weights with the underwater or underground world of the root people are always more in demand. This particular weight was created in 1987. It is such an exquisite and dramatic weight. It has a black ground on top; clear on bottom. An amazingly beautiful piece that should bring many years of pleasure and pride of ownership.
