This is another outstanding offering. As you may have gathered, I am an enormous fan of Masseria. This is one of the finest. This child's glorious smile has to make you smile back. It is titled "Sonriendo" by the artist, meaning "smiling". Francisco Masseria was a unique artist. He combined an incredible ability to draw a viewer into the eyes of a somewhat traditional yet quite romantic portrait that has been lifted to an amazing blend of an impressionist with his traditionalism. The colors and movement of his backgrounds remind one of de Koonig, while the portraits can be compared to Reubens and Delacroix. His wonderful swirling backgrounds that are in themselves abstract impressionist works of art have become part of his 'trademark' of his best works. The other part of his trademark is the romantic realism of the portraits themselves. While his earliest works in Argentina were of children there, once he went to Europe his true genius emerged. He did not use models; rather he let his imagination create the child whose portrait he put on canvas. The majority of his paintings are very closely held in significant private collections. When Royal Doulton, the fine English porcelain company, produced a number of plates reproducing some of Masseria's portraits, the world became aware of his great talent, and his works were sought by collectors on every continent.
There is plenty of information regarding his life, including awards and recognition. His life is fascinating, but his work speaks for itself. I have been very fortunate to be able to buy paintings of his very best work. We pick and choose, because their prices have risen consistently, and are now quite high, even in this "down market". Art should be purchased because it lifts you; it fascinates you; it enriches your life. While this may very well continue to appreciate in price, the true value is the feeling you get from this wonderful acquisition.
