This stylized bird is better in person than in photos. Since his head is turned, we see the eye and open beak from above. The detail on this is very impressive. An informal opinion from an expert dated this to about 1880, and felt that it is probably Japanese. The top piece has a slim metal "nail" that fits into the hole in the bottom piece (the top of the bottom piece). One of our browsers thought this was sold in the 1980's at the very prestigious Gumps in San Francisco.
We have not yet verified this, although about that time period they offered a number or antiques pieces from buildings in Asia. We have temporarily changed the category to Vintage Collectibles until Gumps will possibly respond to our query.
Size: Approximately 2 1/2 inches tall; 2 3/4 inches diagonal head to tail.
Condition: Very Good.
