Francisco Masseria (Argentinean, b. 1926 - 2002) had an exciting talent for portraits. His faces interact with you, whether moving you to smile or be wistful. You rarely see original oils by Masseria on the market. Rather, you see many Royal Doulton plates and large editions of prints. This is less expensive than the other rare original oils we offer, not for lack of quality. It is a fine portrait, but male portraits tend to be lower in price than females. The somewhat abstract background complements the incredible realism of the face. This would be a good example of Masseria's advance into more impressionism. Originally, in Argentina, his backgrounds were dark, usually black. While dramatic, the change ushered in his best work. He has combined abstract with impressionist with realism. Fascinating artist who used his imagination for his portraits such as this, rather than a model.
