Gilbert Michaud (French/Japanese, b. 1948) creates wonderful and colorful scenes from life. Most of his works are sold in Japan. I wish more of his artwork was available in the United States. (More at the end of the listing).

Gilbert Michaud has retained the essence of his childhood in the soft glare of a snow capped mountains, the slate grey and myriad hues of hidden rocky valleys of his native Jura where he was born in 1948. Without any doubt, this emotive landscape has greatly influenced the range of colors that flow from his palette.
For Gilbert Michaud painting is an interplay between light and shadow and a source of eternal meditation.
For the free soul of this dedicated artist everything that surrounds him is a reason for him to paint, dream and invent.
His World abounds with baroque poetic imagery concealed in the folds of delicately subtle allegory. He has taken for his own, Goethe’s maxim: « I adore that which is an impossible dream »

Since 1983, some of the most ardent and faithful followers of his ever growing artistic talent have been Japanese collectors.
Over the passage of time, Gilbert Michaud has gained a renown that stems from him being able to master the intricacies of his unceasing research into the historical use of colours.
An artist, both methodical and expressive, a grand master of the panoply and secrets of the artist’s studio, he achieved the highly privileged chance to share in the major Daimaru exhibition with his« Les Trésors Vivants du Japon » (Japan’s Living Treasures)in Osaka, thus introducing himself as a major participant in French-Japanese cooperation, alongside some of the most prestigious of current French artists in the « l’Ecole de Paris au Japon (The Parisian School in Japan)» exhibition that took place in all of Japan’s major towns and cities from 1985 to 2000.
It is often said that there is not one of the great masters who at some time in their lives was not drawn or moved to express themselves through a sacred theme.
So as not to give the lie to this adage, it was the life of « Padre Pio » (famous Italian mystic) discovered when he gave a personal exhibition at the Villa D’Este in Italy, that inspired Gilbert Michaud to create a comprehensive work of art which included forty canvases, water colours and drawings, a 180 page book, and a bronze sculpture.
It was all the elements of this masterpiece, now acknowledged for its achievement and originality, that enabled Gilbert Michaud to receive the auspicious title of a Member of the « Académie Gentium Pro Pace de Rome », and to be awarded its letters of credibility.
In a World besmirched with impotence, sprinkled with “media misinterpretation” where whipped cream based on nothing adorns the walls of those who have less than nothing to say, where shaving foam, a heap of coal, food colourings, have replaced amber and silver-white pigments, cobalt and alizarin lacquer, turpentine and Aspic oil, we all have the same good reasons to think that, as the artist states, “when you no longer demand excellence you all too quickly become satisfied with mediocrity” .
Do not ask him where art stands in today’s society, or about the wonderful uncertainty of artistic endeavour: for him to paint is to exist.
