This is a perfect hardstone cameo, 1 inch across in a lovely 15 kt gold setting with secure catch for the pin. The carving is so lovely; the woman's head appears in beautiful relief; the graceful lines of her hair are obviously carved by hand, rather than on a machine. The carving is so delicate that parts of her hair are almost transparent. Hardstone cameos are nearly always a good deal more expensive than shell cameos, because the material is more costly and it is much more difficult to carve. Today there are not many people still alive who could carve hardstone cameos as beautifully as this has been.
This is a rare and unique century old cameo, not a mass produced machine cut "wannabe"! The antique dealer from whom I purchased this dated it circa 1860 - 1880.
