India is one of the most fascinating countries in the world. When I was there may years ago I loved the art, variety, the symbolicism, the contrasts. Each area of this enormous country offers different folklore and fascinating mythological characters. This artwork from Rajasthan depicts one of the Akbar and Birbal stories. The Emperor Akbar interacted with his very witty Minister Birbal to the delight of readers. There was always a moral woven into the stories, much like Aesop's fables.
The details on this painting are exquisite. Gouache is the perfect medium for this artwork. Photos do not do justice to this piece. There are highlights in gold. Emperor Akbar is holding a sword in one hand and a feather in his other, while his Minister Birbal is seated on a golden throne. It is in an appropriate custom wood frame.
