Original Sculpture by Artist Gertrudis Gali (1912 - 1988)
Size: 9.6 inches by 6 inches by 5.2 inches,
Medium: hand welded bronze,
Signed by the artist in the bronze base as "Gali."
Purchased directly from the artist in 1982.
Gertrudis Gali works the bronze of her sculptures directly, molding the molten metal, struggling with it to make it bend and obey her will. For this reason, in her works the presence of matter imposes itself upon us immediately. Rugged, erose, very rich in integral and somber elaborations, she maintains nevertheless an aerial grace intact. The very antagonism of these opposing elements; the brutality of matter and the briskness, the conceptual spirituality, is one of the essential characteristics of her work. From this dualism emerges a coherent whole. Mass and volume intertwine through formal relations of extraordinary expressive force and unsurpassed plastic quality.
Her work has been exhibited throughout France, in London, and New York. I have always found this sculpture an exciting piece.
