It is always a treat to find something rare but to find something that encompasses many qualities of rarity AND desirability all-in-one is just a “ one- in- a- blue moon” experience. This little fellow ( 7 ½”, 19cm ) tall has a thin eggshell-like composition head in distinct “ Mottschmann “ style with glass inset pupiless eyes with fixed neck on hard plaster-like composition torso with gauze covered midsection and similarly constructed one piece solid hips, legs ( decorated as if covered by trousers with black molded and painted shoes ), AND most importantly, the wide brimmed hat sitting on his head is attached as an integral part of the head structure. He wears a simple textured cloth shirt with big pointed collar and dark blue wool waistcoat. If you think we are done think again- inside the middle is a squeak box that elicits a sound when bottom legs and torso pressed together! AND he is small and indeed “ cabinet size” and in overall excellent condition for an 1860s era item that appeals to collectors of “ hatted dolls “, “ Motchmann “ dolls, “squeak toys”, and a host of other categories many collectors hope to find all wrapped up in one!
