This is the 'Preferred' 1969 Capetown First Edition SIGNED by Vladimir Tretchikoff and is dated '69 next to his signature. The book is a stunning large format "Coffee Table" edition measuring 19 1/4" x 14 3/4" (49.5 x 37.5 cm's) and has 73 full colour plates. The Gold Dust Jacket is of card type quality ...it does exhibit some scuffing and wear signs...there are also some scratches and indentations. The Cloth cover under is near Mint and the high quality art paper interior pages are about as close to Mint Condition as you are likely to get in a book of this age and type. The art of Vladimir Tretchikoff is now highly sort after by those who are into Retro or 'Mid Century' Decor and even 'prints' are fetching excellent prices. Vladimir Grigoryevich Tretchikoff was born December 1913 in Petropavlovsk, Russia, and passed away 26 August 2006 in Cape Town, South Africa). He was one of the most commercially successful artists of all time - his painting Chinese Girl (popularly known as "The Green Lady") is one of the best selling art prints ever. Tretchikoff was a self-taught artist who painted realistic figures, portraits, still life and animals, with subjects often inspired by his early life in China and Malaysia, and later life in South Africa. Tretchikoff's work was immensely popular with the general public, but is often seen by art critics as the epitome of kitsch (he was actually nicknamed the "King of Kitsch"). He worked in oil, watercolour, ink, charcoal and pencil but is best known for his reproduction prints which sold worldwide in huge numbers. The reproductions were so popular that it was said Tretchikoff was second only to Picasso in his popularity.
