This large pewter Centennial Medallion is 1 3/4" in diameter and dates to 1880 commemorating 100 years of Raikes Sunday Schools.Some indents on rim.
Robert Raikes was an English philanthropist and Anglican layman, noted for his promotion of Sunday schools. He was educated at The Crypt School Gloucester. Sunday Schools Pre-dated state schooling and by 1831 were schooling 1,250,000 children, they are seen as the first precursor schools of the English state school system. Raikes Schools commenced in 1780.
