An absolutely fabulous high quality English Made BELGE ornate Table Oil Lamp that stands A FULL 36 inches in height. The lamp is quite ornate but totally elegant with it's lovely cream Alabaster centre column and detailed metal work. The ornate basket supporting the oil bowl has 'remnants' of a gilt covering that can easily be bought back to its original state. We date this Lamp as circa 1895-1900 The original patent for these lamps dates from 1884, and the earlier examples are labelled Lampe Belge. The Later examples such as this magnificent example are called 'Improved Lampe Belge' and show a 1893 patent. They are also usually labelled Thermidor Belge on the filler cap, and usually have an engraved black winder knob with a 'smiley-sun' trade mark and the legend 'In Lux Way'...... as does this one. Whilst they look very similar to the Belgian made lamps the English made lamps are considerably heavier and were made by the 'Midland Lighting Company' in Birmingham, England. These English made Lamps are really very well made and the majority of English Belge lamps are in the form of drop-founts for fitting into floor stand lamps, hangers and brackets..... but TABLE LAMP versions such as our one are considered to be relatively rare.
