A lovely old souvenir trinket box or vanity box made by VERNON YOUNG of Pitcairn Island Circa 1940's. The box comes with a telegram sent to the past owners of this piece dated 5.10.1949, addressed to them aboard the RMS RANGITATA so we have date provenance for this item. Vernon Young was born in 1901 and was the PITCAIRN ISLAND POLICEMAN from 1960 until 1972 ....he then retired and went to live in England with his Sister but he passed away around 1975.
The box is beautifully fashioned from MIRO wood which was harvested from the nearby coral atoll of Henderson Island....the box measures 9" x 5 3/4" with a depth of 2 1/4".
